Swegway UK Safety Fears…
By now you have surely heard of Swegway boards, if not it’s because you know them as Hoverboards, Mini Swegways, Self-balancing Scooters or Smart Scooters. But whatever you want to call them there is no doubt that this gadget has taken the market by storm.
Their popularity among celebrities propelled them into the mainstream limelight and has made them the must have gift this year. Featuring in everything from social media, celebrity music videos and now the news.
Initially their mention was due to their popularity, but as the craze continued and demand has increased, the market has been flooded by unsafe Swegways. These boards often don’t meet the Swegway UK Safety standards of the UK market, and have been in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Swegways Exploding or Catching Fire
With Christmas around the corner the influx of this gadget onto UK shores has been extraordinary and suppliers trying to meet the Christmas demand. Unfortunately the majority of these Hoverboards are not safe, with 88% found to have significant Swegway UK safety issues and as such were seized by UK Boarder officers and Trading Standards and Safety teams.
Swegway UK Safety tests showed them to have problems with the plug, batteries, power adapter, wiring and cut-off switch which often failed. Many of the seized Hoverboards had non-compliant plugs without fuses which increases the chances of the boards overheating, catching fire or even exploding while charging.
Trading Standards Hoverboard Advice
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has warned consumers not to be tempted by cheap, poor quality Hoverboards as they are more likely to break and cause damage.
“Criminals and irresponsible manufacturers will often exploit high demand and attempt to flood the market with cheap and dangerous products,” said CTSI chief executive Leon Livermore.
He went on to say, “We urge consumers to be on their guard when purchasing these products and advise you read our product safety checklist to help ensure you are not purchasing a dangerous item.”
“As a minimum consumers should check that the three-pin plug on the device states it is made to BS1363. If it doesn’t include this information, then don’t buy the product.”
